Dorm Room Storage Essentials for Summer

Summer is almost . . . here? Even though it feels like summer is still so far away, the school year is almost done! Say goodbye to late night studying and 8am classes and hello to a few months of rest and relaxation. If you’re living on campus there are a few things to think about before hitting the road. Dorm rooms are an essential part of any college experience – but they can be a pain to pack up until September. Want to know what to pack, what to store and what to leave behind? We’ve got the scoop on the dorm room storage essentials so there’s less stress at the end of term.

First things first, books. Avoid the temptation to store all your books in one box. While this may feel efficient at the time, you won’t be happy when it comes time to move it.  Organize your books by subject if possible, and store them horizontally to protect the pages. Using smaller boxes will make for an easier move.

Linens and Bedsheets are great insulators for fragile objects.  Make sure you launder any linens you want to store and use them to wrap items such as mirrors or picture frames.  Not only will this protect the items from breaking, but it will provide a layer of insulation against temperature change which can also damage glass objects. Any extra linens should be stored in a plastic bin to limit exposure to air which can cause mildew.

Kitchen appliances: Do’s and Don’ts. Thank goodness you’re heading back for some home cooked meals and can put the microwave and toaster over away. But before you shut down the kitchen DO make sure the appliances are thoroughly cleaned. Once you’re ready to pack it away DON’T leave the racks or glass carousel inside the appliances. Store these separately with your other dishes to prevent breakages.

Finally, clothes. There’s no need to haul your entire wardrobe home at the end of term, especially since half the items you may not need during the summer.  Make a careful selection of items to bring with you and leave the winter coat and boots behind. If you keep your clothes in a portable organizer that you need to store, keep the items you’re leaving behind inside the container and seal with saran wrap to keep the drawers shut.
