Camping Equipment Storage

“A Camping we will go, A Camping we will go, Hi Ho the dairy o! A Camping we will go!”  The quintessential song of summer.  What could be nicer than to spend sun filled days and starry nights in the great outdoors.  We wait all winter and spring to be at one with nature (yes, that does mean the mosquitoes and blackflies too).  After the bloom of the vacation is over and the long but safe trip home has been accomplished, we want to sit and bask in the memories, but first we need to take care of a few things.  Those few things are the camping gear we just used and brought home with us.  These items need to be taken care of and packed away clean and neatly for our next great adventure. We, here at Green Storage, 1-(844)-50-GREEN have assembled, for you, a list of steps to take to make sure your camping gear stays in great shape.

Clean and Dry

Any type of textiles, like your tent, your sleeping bag, your pack and even your hiking boots should be clean and dry before you pack them away.  This does not mean that you need to haul everything into the nearest dry cleaners or laundromat, but it does mean you need to inspect each item for visible dirt, debris or wetness.  Clean items and make sure that they are perfectly dry before you pack them up.  The least bit of dampness can and will likely mildew and left unchecked mildew can turn into full blown rot!  Clean and dry also refers to the state of your cooking utensils and cookware.  Nothing attracts bugs and rodents more than the smell of a free lunch left in your camping gear.  How disheartening would it be to pitch that tent next time only to find that the mice ate straight through it to get to the bacon grease left on the cookstove packed below.

Batteries and Electronics

Always be cautious when storing electronics and items that use batteries as heat can be very damaging to sensitive equipment.  The best way to prevent corrosion from leaking batteries is to remove them prior to storage.  You can store them in a separate container or even a good quality plastic bag to prevent damage.  This way you will have the batteries readily available and not run the risk of damaging the equipment because of corrosion.

Proper Storage

Even if you take the proper steps and make sure everything is clean and dry, temperature can play a crucial part in storage.  Hot and humid weather creates it own moisture that can work its way into your camping gear and cause mildew to get a toehold. Always make sure that you store textiles in a well ventilated and, if possible, a climate-controlled area.  That can quickly rule out garages, attics and even basements.  This would mean that you would need to store the majority of this equipment inside your residence.  A self-storage unit, in a climate-controlled facility might just be what you need, or you can storage everything on the dining room table, under the bed and in the closet.
