Downsizing Your Life

One of today’s hottest topics is downsizing.  It is one that crosses the gambit from making small apartments seem large and the quintessential baby boomer and zoomer looking to streamline and de-stress life.  The sticking point is usually the first step.  Let us here at Green Storage, 1 (844)-50-GREEN share a few tips to help you with your downsizing task.

Keep, Sell/Donate, Throw Out

Where to start, you muse, with that pile in the corner is as good a place as any.  We all know that we are to divide everything into three piles, the keep pile, the sell or donate pile and the throw out pile.  That is of course an easy rule to follow…right?  It becomes a problem when the keep pile is outgrowing the other two piles at an exponential rate.   Here are few good tips to remember while you are sorting.

  • Paper, paper, paper everywhere and not a scrap to write on. It is important to keep original information for tax purposes, legal information, warrantees, recipes, photos and the list goes on.  But paper does add up and will start to devour space.  Those file cabinets can be purged, and a majority of the files can be scanned and transferred to a web storage or an external hard drive.  Not to be out done by technology, those bookcases that are loaded with VHS movies, why not transfer them to a DVD or upload them online.  These two technological techniques can open up a lot of valuable space.

  • REUSE and REPURPOSE the new battle cry of the frugal-hearted. Pinterest is a great place to learn what to do with that pile of jeans that are begging to become a new quilt to curl up under or the solid wood occasional table that just needs a little paint.  The ideas to reuse and repurpose items are endless.

  • What about those items that you don’t want to hang on to but are worth a few bucks, why not try a garage sale or better yet one of those online buy and sell sites?  You can help others find that perfect cannister set and have it picked up without having to set up the tables in the garage.

Consider Why You Are Downsizing

It is easy to fall into that sentimental trap that makes it very hard to purge those knick knacks.  You need to keep your end goals firmly planted in your mind.  Whether you want to travel or just have less to maintain, it means that you need to remember those goals while you sort through these items.  Now, roll up your sleeves, square your shoulders and tackle those tchotchkes.

Minimize and Maximize

It is time to minimize your clutter and maximize your space.  A great way to achieve this is to consider a self-storage unit.  Seasonal clothes and decorations, fitness and sports equipment and those cherished pieces of furniture that you cannot let go will be securely stored for future use.   This will lessen the clutter, the stress and free up your time to enjoy life.

Now that we have given you some valuable tips on how to tackle downsizing and how a storage unit can be beneficial for your project it is time to select a self-storage facility.  Green Storage has 20+ different sized units, to facilitate your every need.  Our friendly and qualified staff will work with you to provide expert advice.  We even offer truck rentals and moving supplies.  Our premises have 24/7 recorded video surveillance as well as a full site security system.  The facilities are equipped with sprinkler systems and each aisle is equipped with adequate fire extinguishers.  Our facilities are also a climate-controlled environment.
