Make the most of your moving day!

The day you move into your new home will likely be both exciting and stressful. Whether you’re up-grading or down-sizing, sometimes you need a little extra space to help you out during the move. Self-storage is a great solution to help you smooth out those moving day bumps. The first 24 hours in your nw home can be overwhelming - where do you start?

To make the day as stress-free as possible, we have the essential moving day guide for the first day in your new home.

  1. Clean it up!

What a better time to clean a home than when it’s empty? The key things to clean are the kitchen drawers/ shelves (which probably hadn’t been cleaned in years), the appliances (oven, dishwasher, refrigerator), the bathrooms (no explanation needed) and the floors. While this may not necessarily seem like a priority when you have two moving trucks about to arrive, you will be glad you did it!

  1. Move in the tricky, larger items first

If you have a moving company or a bunch of friends and family helping you with the move, be sure to make use of their help right at the beginning while everyone is still available by getting things like beds, mattresses, large appliances, couches and tables in first. This has the added benefit of giving your friends and family something to sit on (instead of the floor) to take breaks.

  1. Move the items that you think you will need during your first 24 hours in next

After your large items have been moved into your home, bring in your necessities. This would include your bedding (or simply a pillow and blanket), pajamas and another change of clothes, a hairbrush, toothpaste and a toothbrush, deodorant, any other hygiene items you may need, medications you may need, some snacks, water bottles, your phone, your laptop, and their chargers.

  1. Don’t stress!

Your first day in your new home is just that, the first day of many. Don’t feel the need to have everything in its exact right spot on the first day. Do what you can, but remember that there will be time to set up your collectibles and other less vital items on another day.

  1. For everything else, take advantage of a self-storage unit to keep organized those season items – or for the things that just don’t have a home yet. Don’t try to pack the whole move into one say. A self storage unit is the perfect way to reduce stress (see step 4) and give you the freedom to organize your new home at your own pace.

Moving day doesn’t have to be overwhelming – think of it as the beginning of a new adventure!
