Summer Cleaning and Storage

We have all heard of spring cleaning but what about summer cleaning? This is the perfect time to make use of the sunny days and helping hands of the children. Yes, I did say helping hands of the kids. This is an awesome time to utilize the extra help and to fill in some of those endless hours. With a little bit of planning you could get into the swing of an epic clutter-buster summer. We, here at Green Storage, 1-(844)-50-GREEN have assembled, for you, a list of tips to help you wrangle up some help for the dogdays of summer.

Incentive Plans.

Motivating kids to help clean up can be a daunting problem but if you entice them with a little reward for all their hard work you may find willing helpers. They will be the ones helping to handle and sort some of their belongings and treasured items so why not let them decide what to do with some of them. They can plan on having a garage sale with the items and make a deal to share a percentage of the profits with them for all their hard work. They can take some of their clothes to a consignment shop or sell items online if possible. These are very good tools for helping them understand the value of work and reward and also allows them to have a say in what happens to some of their items. They may surprise you and decide to donate much of the items as well…a wonderful sense of wellbeing.

Organize and Compartmentalize

By arranging a few select sorting stations ahead of the initial push you can get the children in the habit of organizing early. By setting laundry baskets or large totes in certain areas, like the playroom, their bedroom and the backyard you can encourage them to sort as they go. Have the containers labelled clearly for donate, sell and garbage and each few days go through and dispose of the items as indicated. This will give you a chance to check the condition and make any last few decisions necessary.

Rewards are Wonderful

Whether you are dealing with very young children or the proverbial teenagers you can find what will motivate them to move. It can be as easy as sitting down together and creating a cleaning playlist filled with their favourite songs to help them move and groove and clean. They will have a great time helping to pick out the music for their cleaning sessions. There is also the prize rewards for a job well done. Have a chart that will keep track of certain tasks and chart their progress. Use such rewards as the choice of the movie or game for family night, their favourite meal or a sleepover to help entice a little lighthearted competition. You can have individual tasks as well as team tasks that help them to understand teamwork. This is a great way to get the older children to pair up with younger ones to enable them all to enjoy that sense of accomplishment without over tasking the older children.

While you are in the clutter-buster mode you might just decide that a self-storage unit could be the answer to your prayers. The garage might be on the way to being organized but let’s face it, some of the over-sized, out of season equipment tend to take up a lot of valuable real estate.
